Havana, the capital of Cuba, has long been a global crossroads. A port city with a vibrant multi-ethnic population, it has been a home to leading artists, writers, and musicians.  However, due to U.S. Treasury restrictions, few U.S. citizens have ever seen this jewel of the Caribbean. Fordham has been able to organize a trip, and this weeklong spring break course will focus on Havana's art and architecture and we will meet working artists in Cuba today. In museum and gallery visits, we will see outstanding and little-know works of Cuban art. The city will be our classroom as we engage with the dynamics of the city’s urban development and architectural history as well as explore Havana’s cultural riches, hear its music and meet its people.

In Havana, Casa de Las Américas, one of Latin America’s leading cultural institutions, will be the group’s host. Casa organizes a plethora of events, from book discussions to poetry readings, to musical performances, and we will take part in/attend these as well as other evening events centered around Cuban dance and music.

Four meetings at Fordham during January and February will introduce us to Cuban politics and history and prepare us to be good guests during our Cuban sojourn
