LOCATION

Sogang University was established by the Society of Jesus in 1960 to develop cultivated and culturally sensitive individuals according to the Jesuit educational mission, “Life of serving others.” It is a private university, and even in its short history, it has established its place at the top of Korean universities. Approximately 1,350 foreign students study at Sogang every year attracted by programs designed to form intellectual who combine academic excellence and creative originality.

With over 11 million people in the city proper (and another 12 million in the surrounding areas), Seoul is the largest city in South Korea and unquestionably the economic, political and cultural hub of the country. By some measures it is the second largest urban agglomeration on the planet, after Greater Tokyo. With beautiful palaces, great food, and financial and commercial centers, studying in Seoul is a sure way to experience the Asia of old and new. The city ranks eight in the world in the number of international conferences held each year, it is the hub of venture businesses, leading the Korean economy and being an IT mecca.

DATES

The fall semester begins in August and ends in December; the spring semester begins in February and ends in June. The Academic Calendar contains more information; however, please keep in mind that it does not include the specific arrival and orientation dates for exchange students. Once you are accepted into this program, Sogang will send you updated information regarding arrival and orientation.

PROGRAM ACADEMICS

Academic offerings at Sogang are offered by distinctive Schools which include: Humanities, Social Science, Natural Science, Engineering, Economics, Business Administration, Communications, and Law, as well as Interdisciplinary programs. International students register for courses offered in Korean or English.

Foreign students may also apply for special opportunities, such as research or the Study and Work Experience at Sogang (SWES). In this program, students may complete an internship after the normal semester (i.e. during the summer), though the School of Economics or Business Administration. Past placement opportunities have included large Korean multinational corporations, such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Hyosung Group, etc.

Exchange students are fully integrated into the regular programs with Korean students. This allows you to experience Korean culture to the fullest extent. You may register for courses offered in Korean or English and can take a maximum of 19 credits per semester. Although the main medium of instruction is Korean, many courses are offered in English.

You can search for the courses that are available to exchange students by visiting the Office of International Affairs website. Be sure to read through the instructions for how to properly search for the courses available to exchange students. You may also register, free of charge, in Korean language courses offered by the Korean Language Education Center.

COURSE CATALOG

At Sogang University 3 credit points are the equivalent of 3 credits at Fordham. You must enroll in 15-18 credit points per semester.

HOUSING

Located on campus beside the rear gate, Gonzaga International Student Hall can accommodate up to about 900 students in double rooms. The dorm houses students from all over the world in a multicultural atmosphere. The primary language used in the hall is English.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Before completing the Sogang University visiting student or exchange application, all Fordham Study Abroad Application requirements must be satisfied including the Language Evaluation Form.
